Equipment-shquipment

Weddings are a ton of work and you’re pretty much expected to lug around more gear than a packmule can handle or risk looking like the next door cousin with his daddy’s camera.

One day...

But once in a while you realize none of that matters when your one favourite image out of over 2500 happens to be the one with nothing but your typical lens attached to your typical camera and a concept you thought might be kinda cool.

The Pianist

Never thought I’d say this but, cheers to less gear!

HDR 101

High dynamic range imaging or simply HDR is an interesting approach to photography. The basic idea behind it is to attain right exposure of every object in a picture. Instead of explaining in text I will illustrate this process in pictures.

The human eye can view a scene like this:

When you try to capture the same scene with a camera you will end up with either of the following pictures:

In this case the camera set it self to capture the texture in the sky. To achieve that, the exposure is decreased and that makes the tree turn out dark.

Here the camera set it self to capture the tree. The exposure is longer which makes the sky look blown out and the texture is minimal.

HDR in photography is to capture multiple exposures of a single scene and then merge them in a software such as Photomatrix Pro 3. Here is an example of another HDR I processed for Mr. Niaz of his street sign.

Anik’s Photoshoot

We rented out the 70-200 f/2.8L for the weekend so we had to put it to good use. Sunday evening we called Anik Khan to come down for a random photo shoot with his bike just try experiment. He gladly came down and we found an old abandoned warehouse near our place.

Here is a brief video of Munir narrating the photoshoot.

Sumaiya and Haseeb’s Engagement

Monirul Pathan and I had the opportunity to photograph Haseeb and Sumaiya, a wonderful couple. The location we decided on was High Park due to its wide variety of gardens and flowerbeds. We had a lot of fun trying out new poses and lighting. It was on a hot Saturday afternoon and the lighting was plently but of course Munir suggested using artificial lighting (flash) and shoot directly against the sun! I know it doesn’t make much sense but here is the result of using cross lighting

We strolled around the park looking for interesting places to set up and here are some more picture. The scenery at high park is absolutely gorgeous

As a nature photographer I love to play around with the surroundings and incorporate the elements already present as opposed to setting up an artificial environment. This is not entirely true about the pictures below since flash was used but I used a slow shutter speed to give water that silky look and use glare as part of the image.

At the end of the day we all had a lot of fun. Thank you Sumaiya and Haseeb for having us, it was a real pleasure. We can’t wait to see you at your wedding!

3D Anaglyph Stop Motion Video Tutorial

So David Hobby *sighhhh* (Strobist) and the guys that make PocketWizards got together and decided to throw a contest, and since my PovertyWizard has been crapping up on me lately, I decided to borrow a mic and make a tutorial out of a video I made a few months ago in the hopes of scoring one of those sweet sweet PWs. (And ofcourse, to show people how inexpensive equipment can get you some seriously cool shots!… but you already knew that =))

I’ll be honest. This was the first video I’ve pretty much EVER crapped up made. Adobe Premiere is still scarier to me than 2girls1cup. (If you don’t know what that is, trust me, you’re better off.)

Hit the the jump for links to other relevant tutorials that you’ll need to be armed with, and other stuff.

Hello World!

Hey all,

Over the last year I’ve come a long way in my whole photographic experience. I’ve only really had my DSLR since February I believe, and I’ve learned a LOT. To the hundreds of people at York University that have been so encouraging, I’d like to say…. Thank you. Thank you for everything. Really. =)

And the Internet and all its awesome people that take time out of their day to educate the rest of us hobbyists and ametuers and even pros.

I’d like to do my little bit, so everytime i find something cool, I’ll be posting them up here! So stay tuned!

Love,
–Munir
